About Mid Sweden Tourism Board Economic Association
History
The original organisation of the Mid Sweden Tourism Board has gone through changes during the past years. The organisation was founded in 1984 when the two organisations “Mid Sweden Travel Agency” (specialised in incoming tourism) and the “County Administration Project Office” (the branch of the County Administration specialised in development and tourism) merged. In 1987 the organisation became "Mid Sweden Tourism Board", formally a part of the County Administration.
In 1997 "Mid Sweden Tourism Board" parted from the County Administration and was founded in its current form as an economic association. The members of the economic association are: the County Council of Västernorrland, the seven municipalities Örnsköldsvik, Sollefteå, Kramfors, Harnösand, Timrå, Ånge and Sundsvall, and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. The County Council is no longer formally a part of the organisation but is still an active part in specific projects.
Mid Sweden Tourism Board has three overall goals: Develop, market and co-ordinate tourism in the county. Some of the activities are determined by the initial agreement of the members of the economic association, other activities are decided through separate business agreements. The business agreements can be between the Mid Sweden Tourism Board and one or more of the members, it can also be between id Sweden Tourism Board and external business partners. Often the members and external business partners collaborate.
Funding
The tourism sector in the county recieves development funding from several different parties. The structural funds of the European Union have been a major contributor in recent years, but traditionally the County Council of Västernorrland is a major contributor. Each of the seven municipalities in the County contributes to the tourism industry as well as the County Administration.
Each municipality spends a vast amount of money every year on tourism. Mid Sweden Tourism Board is the county tourism marketing organisation, and projects where Mid Sweden Tourism Board is involved are for the benefit of the whole county. The seven municipalities contribute to the overall marketing as well as to the development programmes.
The marketing money is used for different activities such as participation in trade fairs all over Europe, participation in the Swedish overall tourism marketing campaigns, production of brochures and other tourist information and so on.
Tourism in Mid Sweden
Most tourists visit the area during the summer, June, July and August to be specific, that is, when the schools in Sweden are closed for the summer. However, Sundsvall and Örnsköldsvik have a lot of visitors during the winter as they specialise in MICE-tourism. (Meetings Incentive Conferences/Congresses and Events).
The local economy is dependent on money made from tourism, especially in the more rural areas. As a result of tourism roughly 1 500 people are employed on a year basis. (Each full time employee means 1 700 hours of work during a full year. Most people work part time with tourism.) About 7 % of the inhabitants in the county work in these tourism dependent businesses. Tourism is not the largest industry in the area, but many of the businesses are partly dependent on tourism to keep their enterprise going.
In 2000, tourism generated roughly 1.9 billion SEK to the county Västernorrland.
